Announced inspection of Melaleuca Women’s Prison

The Office of the Inspector of Custodial Services will be inspecting Melaleuca Women’s Prison in March 2026. This will be the fourth inspection of Melaleuca – a maximum-security remand and receival facility for adult women in the Perth metropolitan area.

The previous inspection highlighted that Melaleuca was a ‘one size fits all’ prison, not specifically designed for women. It found the prison managed a very complex group of inmates, but lacked sufficient infrastructure and a purposeful regime. Sixteen recommendations were made to address these areas for improvement.

This inspection will evaluate Melaleuca against 22 of the Office’s 33 inspection standards for adult prisons and will assess the progress made on the previous recommendations.
