Consultation open:
Banksia Hill Detention Centre and Unit 18 Youth Detention Centre
The Office of the Inspector of Custodial Services (OICS) will conduct an inspection of Banksia Hill Detention Centre and Unit 18 Youth Detention Centre in November 2026.
As part of the inspection, we invite feedback from people with experience of either facility, including:
- young people who have previously been detained
- family members and carers
- service providers
- stakeholders
- advocates and community organisations.
We want to understand how young people are cared for, supported and managed, and how well their diverse needs are being met. Feedback may relate to issues such as:
- treatment and conditions
- safety and wellbeing
- time out of cell and access to activities
- education, health, and rehabilitation services
- family, cultural, and community connections
- preparation for release and reintegration
- collaboration between the centres and external service providers.
The information received will help inform the inspection and identify opportunities to improve outcomes for young people in detention.
