The Office of the Inspector of Custodial Services will be inspecting West Kimberley Regional Prison in September 2026.

West Kimberley Regional Prison opened in 2012 with an innovative focus on Aboriginal culture. Its philosophy was shaped through consultation with Aboriginal leaders and community members. The prison’s unique design allows most prisoners to live in community-style households, where they are responsible for their own cooking, cleaning and laundry. This approach promotes independent living skills, personal responsibility and self-determination, with the aim of supporting successful reintegration and reducing the likelihood of returning to custody.

The inspection will focus on 22 out of 33 of the Inspectorate’s Inspection Standards for Adult Custodial Facilities and will assess progress made on the previous recommendations.

A report is expected to be tabled in Parliament in the second quarter of 2027.
